Preparing for Test Day
The UK practical driving test can feel intimidating, but knowing what to expect makes all the difference. You'll spend around 40 minutes demonstrating your driving skills to a qualified examiner, and yes, they're keeping track of every mistake.
The Eyesight Check
Before you even start the engine, the examiner tests your eyesight. You must read a number plate from 20 metres away. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them. Failing this part means you cannot continue with the test.
Show Me, Tell Me Questions
You'll be asked two vehicle safety questions. One "tell me" question happens before driving starts (like "tell me how you'd check the tyres"). One "show me" question occurs whilst driving (like "show me how you'd operate the windscreen wipers").
The Driving Portion
The main test lasts about 38 minutes and includes:
Normal driving in various road and traffic conditions
One manoeuvre (like parallel parking or reversing)
20 minutes of independent driving using a sat nav
Possibly an emergency stop exercise
Understanding the Marking System
Minor faults are small mistakes that don't pose immediate danger. You're allowed up to 14 of these.
Major faults are serious or dangerous errors. Even one major fault means failing the test. Common major faults include lack of observation at junctions, incorrect positioning, and insufficient steering control.
If You Fail
Around 47% of people fail their first practical test, so you're not alone if it happens. You must wait 10 working days before rebooking, and test slots often book up months in advance. Consider booking your next test immediately whilst continuing practice.
Top Tips for Success
Get a good night's sleep beforehand
Arrive early to calm your nerves
Listen carefully to instructions
Check mirrors regularly
Keep a steady, legal speed
Stay calm if you make a mistake
